Mesothelioma Types

It is fact that many mesotheliomas are diagnosed as pleural mesothelioma or peritoneal mesothelioma. However, other types of malignant mesotheliomas can also occur, in other body parts. This can also include the testicles, which is a type of peritoneal mesothelioma. One variety of pleural mesothelioma can cause the cancer to damage the heart. These mesotheliomas are caused by exposure to asbestos fibers. Not all mesothelioma types are related to asbestos.
Mesothelioma may metastasize throughout the lungs in a pattern. The metastases could possibly be clinically detected even before the primary pleural tumor. This mesothelioma type is a designation for metastatic pulmonary tumors of “unknown” origins.
Points of Cancer Origin Are Difficult to Pinpoint
Since asbestos originates in the soil, the causes of mesothelioma types are not all documented. Although some causes are unknown, we do know that asbestos fibers stay suspended in the air for long periods of time, then settle in the soil. Wind and water also disperse asbestos into the environment. Since asbestos can get into lungs when you breathe, you can swallow asbestos fibers into your stomach, without knowing it.
Asbestos does not seem to penetrate the skin and low levels of asbestos are unlikely to damage and harm your health. However, prolonged exposure to asbestos is a very high and dangerous risk.
Benign Mesothelioma
Benign mesotheliomas appear to occur less often than malignant mesotheliomas. Maybe this is because presently, they’re not directly connected to asbestos poisoning. Some research points to a high percentage of benign mesotheliomas plaguing women. It’s reported that there is a high recurrence of cystic mesotheliosis.
Sarcomatoid Mesothelioma
Pathological examination is also helpful in distinguishing sarcomatoid mesothelioma from its numerous morphological changes. This is a very complicated type of mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma cell types can vary. In almost all cases, it appears that IF you cut deep enough from the tumor, you’ll see epithelial and sarcomatoid. If the analysis is extensive, the tumor might prove to be biphasic. The spindle-cell sarcomatoid mesothelioma is misdiagnosed more often. Mixed results remain confusing so in pathology, using an electroscope, not just histology alone, can be used to make a definite diagnosis.
The causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatments are not the same for these types or forms of mesothelioma.
Mesentery Cancer
Mesentery cancer is close to being synonymous with peritoneal cancer, (mesothelioma). The term mesentery technically refers to various sections of the peritoneum that attach different organs to the wall of the abdominal cavity:
- Mesogastrium for the stomach
- Mesojejunum for the jejunum – In this context, it describes all abdominal peritoneal extensions. Tumors rarely originate in the actual mesentery, although it’s a frequent route for the spread of mesothelioma through the abdominal cavity.
When a doctor suspects abdominal cancer, he will perform an MRI, CT Scan or X-Ray to get a view of the chest and abdominal cavities. If the peritoneum is congested with fluid, the doctor will usually conduct a “fine-needle aspiration”, which means he will use a syringe to collect a sample of this fluid. The fluid will than be examined to determine whether or not mesothelioma is present. The “fine-needle aspiration” also allows the doctor to alleviate symptoms caused by fluid build-up. If a diagnosis can not be determined from the fluid sample, than generally a tissue sample or a ‘biopsy’ will be taken.
Mesothelioma Staging
Once mesothelioma has been diagnosed, it must be determined how far the illness has progressed. This is done by studying the imaging of MRIs or CT scans. Doctors refer to this as ‘staging’. Doctors chart mesothelioma in five stages of development (Stage I, Stage II, Stage III, Stage IV, and Stage V).
Stages II through Stage V are considered advanced mesothelioma and often, removal of the cancer is no longer an option. Mesothelioma is very difficult to treat. First, its tumors appear in the membranes that surround the chest cavity and abdominal cavity, than it spreads to the underlying organs. This type of growth makes a complete surgical removal of mesothelioma highly unlikely.
Chemotherapy, radiation, or surgical treatment, when used alone, are often ineffective in treating mesothelioma. Combined approaches that utilize these therapies together, particularly using chemotherapy before surgery, as well as new drugs that specifically target the genetic material in mesothelioma cells, are being tested.
Clinical Trials Are an Option
When traditional methods have failed or seem unlikely to work, clinical trials are sometimes an option for patients. Clinical trials are human research studies conducted to assess the effectiveness of new treatments. The treatments have already been tested in labs and have shown enough promise to be tested on humans. If a patient takes part in a clinical trial, he or she might benefit from a new technique while helping scientists evaluate its effectiveness of the study.
